The Woodman's Daughter 50km Calendar Event 2023
This page is for downloading alternative versions of the GPS files for this, Tom Deakins' calendar event, starting from Great Dunmow, on Saturday 22 April 2023 at 09.00. There's a bit of chatter on yacf.
IMPORTANT The Woodman's Daughter official (off-road) route includes some very lovely off-road sections along the Flitch Way and through Epping Forest. These should be rideable on a road bike with some tyre-clearance on the day. There is also an optional on-road route, which is slightly longer, but does not include the scenic bits. It is possible to load both routes onto your GPS and decide on the day which you would like to ride, as they are named differently.

The GPS Files
IMPORTANT — make sure you understand which version of the following GPS files are most suitable for your device.
- Garmin Edge devices — new 500, new 700, 800/810/820, 1000, 1030 — use TCX; 10,000 points should be okay
- The RideWithGPS IQ App also allows direct download from the pinned track to the latest Garmin Edge units with mobile connection
- Older Garmin Edge devices — you're in a murky area in that TCX should work, but you may get a more reliable result from GPX; 10,000 points should be okay
- Wahoo devices — TCX 10k, or "pin" the RideWithGPS route
- Older Garmin devices — GPX and either 250-point or 500-point depending on which device.
Make sure you test these files out on your device before you start!
The full-route files are provided as a single TCX or GPX each. However, the rest of the GPS routes, where the route is split into multiple GPS files, are provided as a ZIP file for each format — you require all of the files in the ZIP file!
The route is provided as a single course for the whole 50km — FULL
. CAUTION — there is an out-and-back section from the start!
There are additional notes in the organiser's notes and routesheet, including cautions and alternative routes. It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the route and any reported hazards before you start, especially as none of this information is included in the GPS files!
These are the official routes starting from St Mary's Centre, Churchend, Great Dunmow, Essex CM6 2AE.
The Woodman's Daughter 50 official, off-road route
This is the official, off-road route for the 50km event — I have ridden the Flitch Way on 25mm tyres and very little clearance without any significant issues, so you should be fine with more clearance. The optional, on-road route is further DOWN this page.
IMPORTANT The Woodman's Daughter is an anti-clockwise route with an 8km there-and-back start/end along the Flitch Way (off-road), so you must follow the correct pink line when you reach the bifurcation — stay on the Flitch Way until just before 10km, there's a sewage-treatment works on your left just as you come down off the Way!
Note: screen-name starts WOOD_

The Woodman's Daughter 50 optional, on-road route
This is the optional, on-road route for those with dirt-averse sensibilities — the controls are the same, but the kudos is less.
IMPORTANT The Woodman's Daughter is an anti-clockwise route with a 10km there-and-back start/end, so you must follow the correct pink line when you reach the bifurcation — turn right @ T $ Takeley!
This route should appear on your GPS screen as WDDTR_ONROAD50_..
.
